Use these readily available, scientifically studied and clinically validated supplements to keep yourself at peak health throughout the year.
Now, in case you’re wondering, I’m not a nutritionist, dietician or medical professional. I am however, a health and fitness enthusiast. Everything I tell you here I’ve researched and tested on myself and I’m in top physical and mental condition. And have been for more years than I care to remember. But I will if you ask.
However, I take no responsibility for any consequences suffered as a result of following these suggestions. Just like I take no responsibility for what happens to you if you choose to eat at McDonalds every day. I encourage you to do your own research and self-experimentation.
It’s your life and you’re responsible for it. Not me.
Vitamin C.
A water soluble vitamin found in fresh fruits, green leafy veggies and elsewhere. Take two grams a day for maintenance. Five grams a day when you feel a cold coming on or a tickle in your throat.
Much has been written on the benefits of high doses of Vitamin C. Linus Pauling took 12 grams a day and upped that to 18 grams daily when he felt a tickle in his throat. I’m not advocating anything quite so extreme as that, but a couple grams a day has stood me in good stead for years now. I up it to as many as 5 grams if I feel a sniffle coming on.
I can’t remember the last time I had a cold, and my last sick day at work was due to hernia surgery 3 years ago. So there
Vitamin D.
A fat soluble vitamin found in salmon and tuna, added to fortified milk and yogurt and produced in your skin on exposure to sunlight. So get out in the sun! Otherwise (or in addition) take 5000 IU per day.
Vitamin D fights cancer, fights osteoporosis and may even play a role in fighting diabetes. Vitamin D deficiency leads to increased autoimmunity (that’s when your bodies immune system attacks healthy cells) and increased susceptibility to infection.
So take your Vitamin D and get out in the sun!
Fish Oil. (Specifically Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA).
As you might have suspected, these are found in fish (e.g. salmon) and shellfish. Take four grams per day. Omega-3’s fight inflammation and enhance white blood cell activity.
Inflammation is now thought to be the underlying cause of almost all our ailments – cancer, asthma, depression, cardiovascular disease, ADHD and autoimmune disorders. So anything that fights inflammation is going to fight disease. Bam!
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV).
You’re kidding, right? You want me to swallow vinegar? Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. Take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, add it to a glass of water and chug that fucker down.
Not just any ACV. You want the unpasteurized kind, with the “mother” in it. Don’t ask me what those things are and why you want them, just go to the store and buy it. If you want a brand to buy, try Bragg’s. You can get it at most health food stores or places like Whole Foods.
ACV is a natural bacteria fighter that contains trace elements of calcium, iron, phosphorous and magnesium. It also has vitamins C, A, B6, E and many others. It’s been touted as a treatment for everything from dandruff to warts.
It can even help you lose weight if that’s something you’re interested in. But to my mind, it’s one of the cheapest and most effective ways to stay healthy and happy.
Try it and let me know what you think.
Chaga Tea
Ah, Chaga! My new-found favorite beverage. This stuff absolutely rocks. Consumed for centuries in the East, Chaga has now made it’s way into the pantheon of superfoods. This potent immune booster is a hard wood-like mushroom that grows on trees throughout the northern hemisphere.
The Siberians call it the “Gift of Gods” and the “Mushroom of Immortality.” Japanese know it as the “Diamond of the Forest.” Chinese say it is the “King of Plants.” High praise indeed.
Whatever you call it, you must get hold of it. A tablespoon of the dried fungus makes a gallon of tea. Let it simmer for several hours, and drink it up. Hot or cold, doesn’t matter. I find it tastes very much like water with a slight, not unpleasant, flavor. Others say it tastes like dirt. Whatever.
This fungus contains numerous B vitamins, flavonoids, phenols, minerals, and enzymes. It’s one of the world’s densest sources of pantothenic acid (aka vitamin B5 – needed by the adrenal glands and digestive organs.) And it contains riboflavin (vitamin B2) and niacin (vitamin B3) in significant amounts.
Perhaps Chaga’s most potent disease-busting ingredient is something called super-oxide dismutase (SOD). SOD is one of the most powerful anti-oxidation enzymes known to us and destroys the free radicals that damage healthy tissue and lead to aging.
Hence the “immortality” handle.
So there you have it – 5 supplements I rely on daily to maintain health and happiness.
I hope you’ll give them a try for yourself and let me know if they help.
I’d also like to hear what other immune boosters you use.
